Western Nebraska men win at home over MCC 90-71

SCOTTSBLUFF – Western Nebraska maintained its lead in the Region IX south standings Friday with a 90-71 win over the McCook Community College men.

Both teams entered the game at 3-1 in standings and were in a three-way tie for first place with Trinidad State. With the win the Cougars improve to 14-8 overall and 4-1 in the south division of Region IX. Trinidad remains tied for the first in the standings with a win Friday night over Otero Junior College.

Western Nebraska scored the first six points of the game and raced to a 42-24 lead before MCC closed it to 44-33 at the half.

The Indians cut the deficit to 52-44 with 14:37 left in the game before WNCC went on a 12-3 run and took charge of the game down the stretch.

WNCC shot 49.3 percent for the game, making 11 of 25 shots from the 3-point arc and 68.8 percent from the line on 16 free throws – all coming in the second half. The Cougars outrebounded 41-39.

MCC was 38.6 percent from the field, and 32.3 percent from the 3-point line (10 of 31) and made seven of 10 free throw shots.

Bryan Akanmu (Paris, France) led MCC with 17 points. He made three of six 3-point shots. Ty Foster (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 16 and Zeki Cavli (Bodrum, Turkey) added 10 points.

Brandon Kabuya Mpoyi (Paris, France) led MCC in rebounding with nine.

MCC goes to 8-12 and 3-2 in the south division standings.

On Tuesday MCC will host North Platte as part of a women’s men’s doubleheader with the men’s game to start about 7:30 p.m.
