On March 20, 2021, officers with McCook Police Department were contacted by the Des Moines, IA Police Department and advised that they had tracked a vehicle stolen from their jurisdiction to McCook. Des Moines, IA police believed the vehicle was currently located at the Economy Inn in McCook and provided McCook Officers with a description of the stolen vehicle and the subject suspected of the auto theft.

At approximately 6:45 pm, McCook Police Officers located the vehicle parked at the Economy Inn with the subject seated inside.  McCook Police Officers initiated contact with the subject and after confirming the vehicle was stolen, initiated action to take the subject into custody.  As officers attempted to take the subject into custody, the subject began to actively resist arrest and a struggle ensued.  The subject was able to overcome the officers efforts to take him into custody and forcefully entered a McCook Police cruiser that was at the scene.  A second struggle occurred with officers once the subject was inside the police cruiser, but the subject was ultimately able to depart the scene in the police cruiser. The Nebraska State Patrol and other area law enforcement agencies were immediately notified of the situation.  A short time later, the McCook Police cruiser was reported traveling westbound from McCook at a high rate of speed on Highways 6/34.  The subject was engaged by Hitchcock and Dundy County Deputies.  The subject ultimately stopped and was taken into custody near the community of Max without further incident.

As a result of injuries sustained during the struggle with the subject, two McCook Police Officers were transported to Community Hospital in McCook where they were treated for their injuries.  Both officers have been released from Community Hospital and are recovering at home.  Cornelius Depri Perry, age 32 of Des Moines, IA, was taken into custody and lodged at the Red Willow County Correctional Facility.  Perry is being charged with Theft by Receiving Stolen Property, Theft, Resisting Arrest, two counts of Assault on a Police Officer, and Operating a Motor Vehicle to Avoid Arrest.

The McCook Police Department would like to thank the Dundy County Sheriff’s Office, Hitchcock County Sheriff’s Office, Red Willow County Sheriff’s Office,  and Nebraska State Patrol for helping to bring this situation to a safe conclusion.  We would also like to thank McCook Fire & Rescue and Community Hospital for the care our injured officers received as a result of this incident.
