MCC Volleyball takes five-set win over Knights

NORTH PLATTE – The McCook Community College volleyball team came from a two-set deficit on the road Tuesday to win three straight sets over North Platte.

The Knights won the first two sets 25-17, 25-20.

“North Platte did exactly what I thought they would do well,” said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza. “They served tough and played great defense.”

MCC responded to win the final three sets 25-22, 25-17, 15-12. MCC improves to 8-5 on the season having won four straight matches. North Platte falls to 7-5 on the year.

“We had a small window of opportunity and the girls battled back,” Kobza said.

Coming off the MCC Invitational Tournament where she was named to the all-tournament team, Sophomore Janie Sommer, Maxwell, led MCC with 36 assists, five kills and one assist block.

Freshman Thaynara Isabela (São Paulo, Brazil) led MCC with 13 kills to go along with eight digs, one assist block and one ace. Sophomore Jordan Jerome (Rawlins, Wyo.) had 12 kills, seven digs, three assist blocks and one ace.

Victoria Thomas (freshman, Houston, Texas) had nine kills and five digs. Makayla Brown (freshman, Colorado Springs) had five kills, three assist blocks and one ace.

“I think Victoria gave us the drive we needed in the fifth set to finish,” Kobza said.

Jaycee Widener (freshman, Wellfleet) was credited with three kills, Mia Pena (sophomore, Greeley, Colo.,) had two kills and Jisell Chumacero (freshman, Eaton, Colo.) had three assist blocks.

Amanda Pizzol, freshman, São Paulo, Brazil, had 16 digs.

MCC now has a 10-day layoff before returning to the court in Scottsbluff for the Wyo-Braska tournament Sept. 17 against Western Wyoming and Eastern Wyoming and Sept. 18 against Lake Region State College (N.D), and Casper College.

MCC’s next home match is set for Sept. 24 against Trinidad State Junior College.
