LA JUNTA, Colo. – The McCook Community College golf team opened the second half of the season Thursday and Friday and finished in fifth place at the combined Lamar Community College and Otero Junior College tournament. Thursday’s rounds were in Lamar and Friday’s were played in La Junta.

Eastern Wyoming claimed the team title shooting rounds of 281 in Lamar Thursday and 280 in La. Junta Friday – 14 shots better than second-place Central Wyoming.

MCC began the day Friday sixth among the six teams, 14 shots back of fifth-place Northeastern JC, but MCC did pick up 18 strokes on the Plainsmen to finish fifth. After shooting a 318 in Lamar the Indians shot a 295 in La Junta to finish at 613, three shots back of fourth-place Lamar and four shots in front of NJC.

“Day 2 was a better day that saw some lower scores,” said MCC Coach Tyler Loop. “We still have a lot of tidying up to do in several areas but it was a step in the right direction.”

The coach said Thursday was perfect weather but the team had poor game management.

Central Wyoming’s Hunter Hall won the individual title shooting a four-under par 136.

Freshman Andrew Brown, Wollongong, Australia, posted MCC’s low two-day total with an eight-over par 148. He finished in a 13th place tie with rounds of 76 and 72.

Three MCC players finished at 15-over for the tournament. Freshman Zachary Woods (Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia) matched Brown’s low score Friday with a 72 after posting an 83 on Thursday. Matt Grimonprez (freshman, Villenuave-d’ascq, France) had rounds of 82 and 73 and freshman Chance Gambini (Las Vegas, Nevada) had rounds of 77 and 78. All-three finished at 155.

New to the team this semester is freshman Ross Donachie (Narin, Scotland) finished at 23-over with rounds of 83 and 80.

The Region IX field will be in McCook Thursday and Friday for the MCC tournament at Heritage Hills Golf Course.
