Lady Indians win 10th straight on perfect game
GOODLAND, Kan. – The McCook Community College softball team won its 10th game in a row with a couple Monday wins on the road at Northwest Kansas Technical College. MCC won 10-1 and 13-0.
Freshman starting pitcher Sadie Kahl (freshman, Calgary, Alberta), tossed perfect game no-hitter in Game 2.
“The talk of the day is Sadie. She only allowed three balls to one batter and threw a perfect game,” said MCC Coach Mike Mendenhall. “Hats off to her for competing in the zone like she did and trusting our defense.”
MCC outhit NWKTC 11-2 in Game 1 and took advantage of four Maverick errors as sophomore Ella Covill-Marter (Queensland, Australia) struck out seven in a complete-game win from the pitching circle.
“Combined on the day we gave up two hits and no free bags,” said Mendenhall. “Our defense played stellar as we gave up zero as well.”
Freshman Lexi Knapp (Berthoud, Colo.) paced the offense in the doubleheader with five hits in seven at bats, and six RBIs including a home run and three doubles.
“Lexi was a force at the plate,” said Mendenhall. “She had great at bats and squared up every ball.”
The Mavericks fall to 0-10 on the season.
MCC improves to 10-2 and will travel south for doubleheaders this weekend in Oklahoma and Texas. On Friday the Lady Indians play two games at Western Oklahoma State (6-5) in Altus, Okla, and on Saturday go to Clarendon College (0-8) for games at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
“We are a very tough team to beat when our pitchers compete in the zone and we play defense,” said Mendenhall.
The Lady Indians return home March 4 for a pair of games with Northwest Kansas Technical College. Game times at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

GAME 1 – McCook CC 10, Northwest Kansas Tech. 1: MCC scored a run in the first inning on a walk and an RBI-single by freshman Lexi Knapp.
The Mavericks tied the game in the bottom of the first on a pair of two-out hits.
Knapp doubled to lead off the third which ignited a five-run inning. Sophomore Brylee Dean (Gering) singled in Knapp. After a single, walk and a strikeout, freshman Haylee Anguiano (Abilene, Kan.) drove home Dean with a sacrifice fly. A walk loaded the bases and a triple steal put MCC up 4-1. An error brought in another run and freshman Laila Gutierrez (Seminole, Texas) hit an RBI single to give the Lady Indians a 6-1 lead.
Gutierrez doubled in Anguiano in the fifth. Freshman Angela Banzet (Surrey, British Columbia) singled in Gutierrez and Knapp hit a two-run home run to put MCC ahead 10-1.
Ella Covill-Marter picked up the win from the pitching circle. She twirled five innings, allowed two hits, didn’t walk a batter and struck out seven.
MCC outhit NWKTS 11-2 with Knapp posting a three-hit game with three RBIs. Gutierrez and freshman Anna Elliott (Calgary, Alberta) both had two-hit games.
GAME 2 – McCook CC 13, Northwest Kansas Tech. 0: Laila Gutierrez tripled to lead off the game and scored on a Maverick error and MCC scored a second run on a NWKT passed ball.
That was all the runs starting pitcher Sadie Kahl needed as she faced 15 batters in her five innings of work and retired them all, four on strikeouts.
Sophomore Ava Martinez (Houston, Texas) and freshman Kendree Kern (LaSalle, Colo.) each singled to lead off the second inning and MCC took a 3-0 lead on a back-to-back walks followed by a two-run single by freshman Angela Banzet (Surrey, British Columbia) to put MCC up 5-0.
The Lady Indians scored four times with two outs in the third highlighted by a two-run triple by freshman Ayana Goodwin (Broomfield, Colo.), an RBI single by Banzet and a two-run double by Knapp.
MCC added four more runs onto the 9-0 lead in the fifth inning with five straight two-out hits with singles by Gutierrez and Banzet, back-to-back doubles by Knapp and Kahl and an RBI-single from Anna Elliott.
MCC had 13 hits in the game with three by Banzet and two each by Gutierrez and Knapp, who doubled twice.
