Balanced scoring leads MCC women past Concordia JV

The McCook Community College women used a balanced attack Friday at home in a 72-54 win over the Concordia University JV team.

MCC Coach Brandon Pritchett said playing teams you don’t see frequently are often difficult matchups.

“But we actually did watch Concordia and prepared for them,” said Pritchett. “We knew they are a team that takes a lot of threes and make a lot too.”

On Friday 31 of Concordia’s 58 shots were from the three-point line and they shot 29 percent. Overall Concordia shot 32.8 percent from the field for the game.

“I thought we guarded the three-point line fairly well,” said Pritchett. “And overall defensively I thought we played this team fairly well.”

MCC forced 22 turnovers.

“A lot of that was our defensive pressure making them made mistakes,” said Pritchett.

MCC had four players in double-figures. Sophomore Audra Vine (Thornton, Colo.) led MCC with 18 points, including a four-for-five night from the 3-point line. Gemma Gruettner Bacoul (sophomore, Berlin, Germany) scored 16 points.

Freshman Carlota Aliaga Alonso (Valencia, Spain) came off the bench for 14 points and five rebounds and sophomore Rebecca Dunn (Colorado Springs, Colo.) had a double-double with 12 points and a team-best 10 boards. She made five of nine shots from the field.

“Carlota hadn’t been finishing very well but tonight we fed her the ball, and she made plays and made baskets so I’m excited for that for her,” said Pritchett. “And I thought she rebounded the ball aggressively too.”

MCC shot 47.6 percent from the field, made five of 12 from the 3-point arc (41.7 percent) and made seven of 11 free throws (63.6 percent). Both teams had 39 rebounds.

“This was a great game to continue to prepare for Lamar on Tuesday,” said Pritchett.

MCC goes to 13-10 on the season.

The Lady Indians are back in Region IX play Tuesday at home when the host Lamar Community College (5-13). Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. with a men’s game to follow.
