The Lavendar Scare

Time: 7:30 PM

Phone: 13086324311

Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, Scotts Bluff National Monument, and Fort Laramie National Historic Site, hosts A Screening of “The Lavender Scare” at Scottsbluff Nebraska’s Historic Midwest Theater.

Harrison, NE:  As America’s storytellers, the National Park Service (NPS) is committed to telling the history of all Americans in all of its diversity and complexity. For many years, the histories of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer Americans have been erased through punishing laws and general prejudice—appearing sporadically in police proceedings, medical reports, military hearings, and immigration records. Their stories highlight how personal lives continuously are affected by (and affect) the political, economic, social, and commercial. Personal identity and shifting definitions of gender and sexuality are central to the American experience and reveal the complexities of our nation’s citizenry.

The NPS is offering, free of charge, the opportunity to viewThe Lavender Scare, a film about the decades- long systematic exclusion of homosexual people from employment in the government.

Join Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, Scotts Bluff National Monument, and Fort Laramie National Historic Site for the presentation of The Lavender Scareon Sunday, June 24, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at the Historic Midwest Theater in Scottsbluff, Nebraska.

ABOUT THE FILM

The Lavender Scare is the first documentary film to tell the little-known story of an unrelenting campaign by the federal government to identify and fire all employees suspected of being homosexual.

In 1953, President Eisenhower declared gay men and lesbians to be a threat to the security of the country and therefore unfit for government service. Over the next four decades, tens of thousands of government workers lost their jobs for no reason other than their sexual orientation. This action helped ignite the gay rights movement.

In 1957, a Harvard-trained astronomer named Frank Kameny became the first person to fight his dismissal.  His attempts to regain his job evolved into a lifelong fight for the rights of LGBT people. The Lavender Scare is a compelling story of one man’s fight for justice and a reminder of how important it is to protect the rights of all citizens.

For more information, please call the park at 308-665-4110 between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. seven days a week.
